From Superintendent, William Banning

Recently, I shared my decision to retire as Superintendent of the Goleta Union School District, effective at the end of this school year.

While I have made many important decisions in my role as superintendent, this one has proven to be among the most difficult. I consider it an honor and a privilege to have been selected as GUSD Superintendent and I am extremely proud of the excellent work that has been undertaken during the past five years.

We are doing important work, supported by strong foundations of success and high expectations, cultivated for decades in this community. It is engaging and meaningful work supported by a remarkable team that includes amazing classified staff at every level, exceptional teachers, talented principals and administrators, dedicated parents and families, and a truly committed Board of Trustees. Every individual on this team has the best interests of children at the core of their work. In these short five years, we have all grown together, grieved together, learned together, and celebrated together.

In a message earlier this year, I reflected on the District’s mission “to maximize academic, intellectual, and personal growth in order for each student to prosper in, and positively influence a diverse and dynamic world.”   What I wrote then remains true now, and clearly represents my sentiments as I prepare for my transition. I wrote, “We are not satisfied with academic growth. Nor are we satisfied with prosperity for each student. Our mission encompasses intellectual and personal growth. And it aspires to go beyond prosperity to include a positive influence on the future. These are bold words and noble aspirations. When we embrace them as a community and they become part of our identity, they become a powerful call to action.”

Part of the power of such an aspirational vision embraced by the school community is the capacity it has to guide us, even as individual members of the team change over time. As I move on to the next phase of my life, I am confident that GUSD’s robust history and its ambitious aspirations for the future will continue to be guided by strong tradition and a vibrant vision for what is yet to come.

The children of Goleta Union School District are in good hands.
