GUSD Board of Trustees Adopts Resolution in Support of Students

At the February 22 Meeting of the Goleta Union School District Board of Trustees, the Board voted to adopt a Resolution in Support of Students. I’d like you to take a moment to read this important statement by the Board of Trustees to our community.

Before you read it, however, I’d like to add a personal note to this issue. We understand that there are questions and anxieties among our community members who may be vulnerable to recent changes in immigration policy. The resolution adopted by our Board simply reaffirms our commitment to do everything in our lawful authority to protect our students and our families from any disruption in their learning environment that might be caused by immigration enforcement activity.

I would also like to acknowledge that we have no reason to believe that there will be immigration actions at our schools. Federal guidelines continue to be in place that restrict enforcement activities in sensitive places, which include schools, hospitals, and places of worship.

It is also important for our community to know that GUSD schools are now, and will continue to be safe places for children. The resolution resolves that we will maintain that commitment and provide resources for our staff and community to help understand the legal rights of immigrants in the California public school system.

I commend the GUSD Board of Trustees for adopting this Resolution in Support of Students. When we find ourselves in challenging or uncertain times, we want to support our students by maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for one and all. Because in the end, what affects one of us, effects all of us.
