The GUSD Board of Trustees has approved new leases for the former El Rancho School property (7421 Mirano Dr., Goleta, CA 93117).
New leases will split the campus between two private schools, Santa Barbara Montessori School (SBMS) and the Waldorf School of Santa Barbara (WSSB).
Both schools have leased space from the District for over 10 years and both have experienced significant enrollment decline recently. SBMS no longer needs to lease the entire El Rancho campus with only 70 students. WSSB has been leasing a small space from GUSD at the Fairview Ave. site, and the rest of their students were at Hope School District’s Vieja Valley School. Their move to El Rancho will allow them to consolidate their students together. The leases are for three years and allow the District or tenant to terminate with one year’s written notification.
This new shared campus concept will allow both schools to continue operations, and keeps the campus used for educational purposes until such time that the Goleta Union School District may need to re-open it as a public school. The combined enrollment of both schools is projected to be about 180 students for the upcoming school year, a number of students approximately equal to the enrollment of SBMS at its highest point and well below the 350+ students that were on the campus when it was closed in 2003.The two schools will be held to high standards of minimizing traffic impacts on the neighborhood and to continue to allow free use of the campus for recreation by the community during non-school hours.
